Gibson’s innovative approach to workplace safety a winning formula for roofing industry

Workplace safety guidelines

Roofing is a high-risk, high-liability industry. That’s why at Gibson Building Supplies, workplace safety is our number one priority. To ensure safety across every department, Gibson has developed an innovative program that includes training, risk identification, corrective actions, employee recognition, and continued education.

Abbas Dhanji is Gibson’s Transportation & Logistics Manager. He is also heading up our proactive new program that puts our commitment to workplace safety into action. This robust workplace training and safety initiative is being developed in partnership with RMG Consulting, experts in health & safety practices.

Training & certification audits

The multi-faceted programs look at workplace safety across the board:

  • We proactively identify required training and expiry dates to ensure compliance.
  • We do monthly facility and on-the-road driver audits.
  • We generate corrective actions with follow-up for completion.

Preferred rates for “Working at Heights” training

When working with the Gibson team, customers can obtain or update their “Working at Heights” licenses at a preferred rate. Our Sales Reps are also trained so they can get on roofs with our customers.

Safety scorecard

We’ve introduced a data-driven scorecard with three key drivers:

  1. Training requirement completion
  2. Corrective action
  3. Incidents & Injuries

The monthly scorecard is an indicator of our organization’s health and safety culture.

Driver recognition for safety

Our vehicles are equipped with GPS devices that monitor driver behaviour and gather data to produce a driver safety habit ranking. Driver safety performance rankings are known to be a leading indicator of future potential incidents or accidents. Based on our driver rankings, we recognize and reward:

  • Driver of the week
  • Driver of the month
  • Driver of the year

This recognition program has dramatically improved all safety behaviours.

Company-wide safety training

Everyone at Gibson does safety training, including our warehouse staff, truck operators and our office support staff.
