How NOT to be short-staffed during the busy roofing season

Gibson provides tips to hire good roofers for the busy roofing season

So far, so good. As roofing companies prepare for the upcoming roofing and construction season, there’s a lot to look forward to. Many of the supply chain issues and shortages from previous years have been resolved, and consumer spending remains strong. Now’s the time to take advantage of that momentum. Make sure you have the competent roofers you need to kick off a busy and profitable roofing season.

Here are new ways to recruit the roofers you need:

Create a more diverse workforce

  • With more workers exploring their options these days, you might find there’s a new variety of people who are looking to work in the roofing and construction industry.
  • In your job postings, you should make it clear that you’re open to hiring all types of people from different industries outside of roofing.

Who says women can’t be roofers?

  • Roofing has always been considered a “male-dominated” profession. But that’s changing and there’s a growing number of women in roofing.
  • Check out The National Women in Roofing (NWiR). This organization can help you find women roofing professionals who are interested in working in a wide range of jobs across the roofing industry.
  • In the careers section on the NWiR site, you can post your company’s job openings and tap into a whole new labour market.

Not everyone wants to work in tech!

  • Many students are open to new ways to pay off the large amounts of student debt they’ve racked up by getting a post-secondary degree. Spending a summer roofing can be a great way to get out of debt.
  • Career fairs at local high schools and vocational programs are good places to promote the benefits of working in the trades.
  • Tap into local apprenticeship and co-op work term opportunities.
  • Partner with some local roofing industry associations for help with recruiting and training workers.

Advertise your jobs where people are searching

Post jobs on social media and your website

  • If your company is on social media, be sure to post your job openings. It’s a great way to attract new workers while you promote your business.
  • Keep the careers section on your website current. List key details about all of your available jobs and make it easy to apply.

Ask your suppliers for recommendations

  • At our different Gibson Building Supplies locations, we’re often asked if we know any roofers who’re looking for a job. We’re always happy to pass along a name if we can.
  • Let people know that you’re looking … word gets around and you could snag some great new roofers for your team.

Once you’ve recruited good roofers, here are some tips on how to keep them on your team. Check out this article: How to keep good roofers on the job.
